Players were obviously excited about Half-Life: Alyx's release and the expansion (and potential continuation of) Half-Life 1 & 2's story, evidenced by the fact that hundreds of thousands of people were watching Half-Life: Alyx on Twitch while only nineteen thousand people were currently playing the game on the day of it's release. "What I'm confident will happen is that when people get that butchered version, and they'll have lost all the things that we'll have got from moving to VR, they will then understand very clearly why we made that choice." I've been half trolling members of the team who are worried about this." The designer was adamant that a modified, virtual reality-less version of Half-Life: Alyx would only show just how right their choice was, stating. When asked about the possibility of someone modding the game to remove the VR elements, Walker replied, "I'm looking forward to it.
" We joked that were more worried about announcing the game than finishing it." Still, knowing they would be angering some players right at the start wasn't something the developers enjoyed. "We would have never made a choice that big if we didn't think we were getting a huge amount of value out of it," Walker said. In a recent interview with VGC, Valve designer Robin Walker explained how the company knew there would always be some players who were disappointed Half-Life: Alyx was going to be VR-exclusive, but they think the game will explain to them why such a decision was necessary. Despite the franchise not having received a main entry since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007, many players were upset to learn the next official Half-Life game would be playable with VR headsets only, something which many players have not yet purchased.Īlthough VR is becoming more and more accepted by both players and developers alike as a new way to tell stories and create unique experiences in video games, the high price point required for a quality VR setup and the previous lack of AAA titles when compared to other, less expensive methods of playing games kept many from becoming early adopters of VR hardware. Contrary to what some people may think, Half-Life Alyx developer Valve has some employees who are eagerly awaiting a player-created mod which removes VR from the game, but only because they think it will prove how important virtual reality was was for this iteration of the Half-Life series in the first place.
